Dogs in Space, set in 1978 Melbourne, is mostly about the day-to-day lives of some social misfits living in an inner-suburban house.

It stars Michael Hutchence as a small-time musician, and follows his relationship with a girl, their drug use and the band he leads as vocalist.

The film is set against a number of quirky subplots and, in a fragmented manner, touches on lives of the other characters, with varying degrees of positive and negative outcomes in each little narrative.

For me the most important thing to capture in the menu design was the stark contrast between the highs and the lows in the film. Director Richard Lowenstein’s style of juxtaposing mundane moments and social boredom with sequences of intensity and recklessness is fantastic. So I edited the footage to jump back and forth between these passive moments and intense moments, for an erratic vibe that I believe stays true to the film’s wonderful artistic approach.

The client required the classic Hollywood mix of elegance and grandeur, but had a fairly tight budget. So I sketched the plan for the interior in which the animation would take place; a large room with walls constructed of film screens, containing the Hollywood Gold branding floating above a central pillar, similarly constructed of film screens.

To save time on editing, I cut arbitrary footage from a handful of the films being released in the Hollywood Gold collection and began constructing my scene in After Effects.

I gave everything a golden wash except for all the footage on the central pillar, so that the viewer will know that the films in the series are in colour.

The music was created by re-timing a piece of stock audio and by adding extra layers at the end to thicken up the sound.

Within the episodes, the vision quite often cuts to short sequences containing multiple camera angles. By superimposing these shots, as well as some multiple camera angle shots of my own, over even more layers of action and ‘techie footage’ in an undefined space, I believe I have given this menu quite a high-tech, Orwellian vibe.
